The National Emergency Office (Onemi) said that during the early hours of Saturday, Guallatiri volcano, located in the commune of Putre, in the region of Arica y Parinacota registered a type of « volcano tectonic » earthquake .
According to the report, the monitoring stations around the massif, recorded seismic activity at 17h21, with its epicenter at 8.9 kilometers south–southwest of the main crater, and a depth of 3.6 km . Onemi also explained that so far there have been 31 aftershocks of lesser magnitude, without being felt by communities in neighboring areas.
Following the above, the level of technical alert level remains at green. In addition, the National Geology and Mining Service (SERNAGEOMIN) continue the monitoring online of the volcano and the Regional Directorate of Onemi will maintain coordination with members of the civil protection system to provide early warning against a possible emergency situation caused by the behavior of the volcano.
One of northern Chile’s most active volcanoes, Volcán Guallatiri is a symmetrical ice-clad stratovolcano at the SW end of the Nevados de Quimsachata volcano group. The 6071-m-high Guallatiri lies just west of the border with Bolivia and is capped by a central dacitic dome or lava complex, with the active vent situated at its southern side. Thick lava flows are prominent on the lower northern and western flanks of the andesitic-to-rhyolitic volcano. Minor explosive eruptions have been reported from Guallatiri since the beginning of the 19th century. Intense fumarolic activity with « jet-like » noises continues, and numerous solfataras extend more than 300 m down the west flank.
