Kuchinoerabu-jima, Îles Ryuku, Japon:
Massive vulcanian explosion, pyroclastic flows, island ordered to evacuate:
A powerful vulcanian explosion occurred this morning at 11:02 am local time at the volcano. The eruption – a both vertical and partially lateral massive explosion, occurred with apparently little warning from the Shintake vent and produced large pyroclastic flows by column collapse. A tall mushroom ash plume quickly rose to approx. 12 km altitude (36,000 ft).
JMA raised the alert level to the highest (5 out of 5) and authorities ordered immediate evacuation of the 130 inhabitants. Preliminary reports say that no fatalities or significant damage occurred, although this seems almost too good to be true, judging from the view of a massive pyroclastic flow that swept down to the coast near the port of the small island.
A ferry nearby was diverted to assist this operation and regualar ferries to the Tokara islands are being canceled as the vessels are used for the evacuation. Authorities even consider evacuation of nearby Yakushima island, known for its world-heritage forests and a popular tourist destination.
All historical eruptions from Kuchinoerabujima have occurred from Shintake – the youngest of 3 stratovolcanoes forming the island. Frequent explosive eruptions have taken place from Shintake since 1840; the largest of these prior to today’s eruption was in December 1933. Several villages on the 4 x 12 km island are located within a few kilometers of the active crater and have suffered damage from eruptions.

Wolf, Ile Isabella , Galapagos, Equateur :
Yesterday around 18:00, there was the entrance in the sea of lava flow from the Wolf volcano on Isabela Island, following the eruptive activity since 25 May. The natural spectacle was captured by the crew of the M / S Endeavour, which made its tour route around the area.
Furthermore, the phenomenon is constantly monitored by the Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School, who in his report sent yesterday afternoon, reports that the explosions ceased in the region, but there are very thermal anomalies high, so it is presumed that it is open to new or existing cracks increased in size. Meanwhile, the Galapagos National Park confirms that the populations of pink iguana , yellow iguanas and giant tortoises of Wolf volcano are out of reach of lava flows, because the eruption is centered on the southern flank of the volcano . The process of eruption of a volcano is a natural event, part of the geological evolution experienced by Isabela and Fernandina Island, the youngest of the archipelago.
The lava flow on its way to the sea, could affect some species of small reptiles in the region, such as lizards and snakes endemic; and some variety of flora of the Galapagos. However, the environmental authority will monitor changes that occur in the ecosystem through an environmental assessment, undertaken once the volcanic activity completed, confirming that the area is safe for entry rangers.

Nevado del Ruiz, Colombie :
Subject: Bulletin of activity of Nevado del Ruiz volcano ,19 to 25 May 2015.
Yellow activity level or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.
Regarding the monitoring of the activity of Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the SERVICIO Geologico COLOMBIANO through the OBSERVATORIO VULCANOLÓGICO Y SISMOLÓGICO OF MANIZALES, reports that:
During the last week, the Nevado del Ruiz volcano continued to show significant seismic activity related to fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits. This activity was characterized mainly by recording several episodes of volcanic tremor, associated with the movement of fluids, gases and ash emissions in the atmosphere.
In addition, there was continued recording of seismic activity associated with the fracturing of the rock in the volcanic structure. Earthquakes are located mainly in the south-west of Arenas crater in the north and northeast, at depths between 1.8 and 8 km. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 1.4 ML (local magnitude), corresponding to an earthquake in the north of Arenas crater, which took place on May 19 at 19:38 (local time) at a depth of 4.60 kilometers. Continuous volcanic deformation show some changes. In the atmosphere the volcano continues to contain significant quantities of water vapor and gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2). The gas and steam column reached a height of 1,500 meters above the summit of the volcano, and sometimes is observed with shades of gray because of the presence of volcanic ash. The direction of the dispersion of the column was in harmony with the wind regime, which remained mainly towards the northwest sector of the volcanic edifice.
The Servicio Colombiano Geológico by his Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico of Manizales, explains to the community in a broad sense, that the Nevado del Ruiz volcano’s activity level continues at YELLOW (III), and there is no been other changes to those reported in recent weeks.
