This is a notice of increasing seismic activity of Bulusan Volcano (12.7667°N, 124.0500°E).
Since 5:00 AM yesterday until 12:00 noon today, a total of 38 volcanic earthquakes were recorded by the Bulusan Network, way above the background level of seismic activity. Although other monitoring parameters have remained unremarkable, the increased seismic activity may be precursory to minor steam-driven or phreatic eruptions occurring at the currently active west-northwest, northwest, southwest or summit vents, based on past behavior of the volcano.
Alert Level 1 status is strongly reiterated over Bulusan Volcano. The local government units and the public are reminded that entry to the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited due to the possibility of sudden steam-driven eruptions. Civil aviation authorities must also warn pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ejecta from sudden eruptions may be hazardous to aircraft. Furthermore, people living within valleys and along river/stream channels should be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall. DOST-PHIVOLCS is closely monitoring Bulusan Volcano’s activity and any new development will be relayed to all concerned.
