The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) is closely monitoring Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon, as the rainy season starts and may trigger lahar flow.
Devorah Fernandez, volcanologist based at the Cabid-An monitoring station in Sorsogon City, said they are conducting a 24-hour watch of the volcano.
Fernandez said they detected a volcanic earthquake over Bulusan yesterday and a magnitude-3.3 tremor some 13 kilometers south of Sorsogon.
“This mild earthquake that occurred at 9 a.m. is not expected to affect the abnormal status of Bulusan,” she said.
Raden Dimaano of the provincial disaster risk deduction and management office said they prepared food packs for distribution in Irosin, Juban and Bulusan towns, the areas most threatened by the volcano’s abnormal activity.
Dimaano said they also have enough supply of medicine to address the needs of the villagers.
Phivolcs, in a bulletin issued at 8 a.m. today, said Bulusan Volcano, at 9:46 p.m. Wednesday, generated a steam-driven explosion from a vent on its northwest upper slopes that propelled an ash plume approximately 250 meter high before it drifted west.
Based on its seismic record, the explosion lasted 3.5 minutes and traces of ash were observed in Sitio (sub village) Tulay of Barangay (village) Bagsangan and in the villages of Cogon, Monbon, and Tinampo in Irosin, Sorsogon.
