Special Report No 65. Chaparrastique: The activity of the volcano increases
The activity of the volcano continues to be abnormal on the Chaparrastique. During the last 24 hours, the seismic vibration of the volcano has fluctuated between 142 and 600 RSAM units, average per hour, with an average of 356 units, the normal value is 50 RSAM units (Figure 1).
At 10:00 Thursday, August 13, monitoring cameras recorded the beginning of a volcano degassing process; there is no evidence of high temperatures. On images of pulses of gas, the color of emission of gas indicates emission of ash, which has not been verified by local observers. The gas monitoring station, located in the Casa de la Cultura de San Jorge, recorded between 600 and 1400 tonnes per day of sulfur dioxide emissions, which is considered as high values.
These sudden changes in volcanic gas emissions and seismic vibrations are high indicator of fluid injection (gas, water or magma) in the system. The activity of the volcano is abnormal and unstable. It is not impossible to come face to the emergence of the issue of gas and ash, and even the presence of lava to the surface. In response, the MARN calls to journalists and individuals not approach the top of the volcano, because of the degree of danger it presents.
ORANGE alert level is maintained on the volcano
The MARN continues its enhanced device monitoring, and maintaining close communication with the General Directorate of Civil Defense and local observers.
