Lahar down the slopes of Chimborazo volcano
10 MARCH 2016. A loud crash was heard at the top of the Chimborazo volcano, located in the Andes, Ecuador, in the early hours of Thursday, March 10, 2016. A few minutes later, a lahar descended in the southwestern flank of the volcano.
The material, which also dragged huge boulders, reached the railroads , in the section of the tourist route ‘Ice Train’. So the tours will be suspended until the completion of the cleanup. The lahar overflowed the creek by four meters bypassing the Saint Lucia Chuquipogyo community, but completely covering the road and isolating the inhabitants of four communities.
“It sounded like a helicopter, like the first time it happened, was due to an ice thaw. We assume that the glaciers have broken and therefore chunks of ice have fallen, “said Manuel Paca, one of the residents of the sector.
Technical Secretariat of Risk Management has made a tour to determine the extent of the thaw. Preliminarily damages to homes and crops were discarded.
This Risk Management also ordered the mobilization of machinery Guano Cantonal Government for the cleaning of the road and railroad tracks. This would be the largest lahar, since the ice began to decline in November 2015.
