Mexican authorities remain on alert for continuous activity of Colima volcano, which recently has intensified with loud explosions, enhanced surveillance in four shelters in the event of a possible disaster. Recent ash emissions up to seven kilometers high, and incandescent lava drops have been described by experts as the most important activity of this volcano located on the border between the states of Colima and Jalisco, in western Mexico.
Activity increased since last Thursday with the fall of incandescent material and has intensified in recent hours with two strong explosions on the south and southwest sides, and the emission of steam. The constant ash fall has forced the authorities to restrict the presence of people in a radius of 12 km around the slopes of the crater, and thus evacuated at least a hundred people in the villages of La Yerbabuena, La Becerrera, Barranca del Agua and Rancho el Jabali, says the Chief of civil protection operations of Colima, Ricardo Ursúa.
He explained that the ash covered much of the crater area and the situation was complicated by rainfall in the past hour, so it is possible that the restriction zone could be expanded to avoid damage residents. In the hamlet of La Yerbabuena, ash accumulation reaches five centimeters above the ground. In turn, the government of Jalisco reported that were preventively evacuated communities of Juan Barragan, Los Machos, Caucentla, Cofradía, El Fresnal and Agostadero .. Some 150 evacuees will be relocated to a shelter in Tonila.
In turn, the governor of Colima, Mario Anguiano Moreno said that the volcano is « an effusive stage, not alarming, but we must be ready.« But later, Anguiano announced via Twitter that the network « because of falling ash in the area, he closed the operation of the airport Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado to commercial and private flights. » The State Government said that since Friday, was conducted a review of the sources of water supply in the municipalities of Comala, Cuauhtémoc and Villa de Alvarez and temporary shelter, to check that they are not contaminated by ash.
With an altitude of 3820 meters above sea level, this volcano is considered one of the most active in Mexico with Popocatepetl, in central Mexico. For its part, the National Coordination of Civil Protection of the Interior Ministry said that since this morning, « it has been observed by instruments an increase in activity fluctuates during the events » involving the issuance of ash columns, pyroclastic flows and landslides.
He said Saturday the geological sub-committees of Colima and Jalisco met to analyze the behavior of the volcano, « whose activity is considered as atypical.« « Given the current rainy season and the large amount of material deposited on the volcano, it is recommended that people respect the exclusion distance to all kinds of activities in a 12 km zone, as well as an area of 14 km closed to traffic of vehicles, « he said.
