The Fuego volcano, located 31 miles (50 kilometers) west of Guatemala City, began Thursday a new eruption with explosions and the release of ash, officials said.
According to the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH), the activity of the cone of 2,338 miles (3763 meters) high, started at 4:50 local time.
According to the scientific body, the effusive eruption maintaining an incandescent source that ejects lava flows 1,000 meters long south of the volcano.
There is also another stream to the north-west, 700 meters, he said.
The eruption, the eighth so far this year of the Fuego volcano, located between the departments of Chimaltenango, Escuintla and Sacatepequez, expels gases and ash 4,800 meters above sea level and forms a column of smoke that moves south and southwest at 12 kilometers away.
The Bulletin of the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conrad), with information from the volcanology institute said that in recent weeks, the volcano maintained a high activity level, which is reflected in the increased frequency and energy explosions.
At the moment, the activity poses no danger to nearby populations, according to INSIVUMEH. However, Conrad declared a yellow alert (prevention).
In addition, it was recommended to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation that the necessary precautions are taken to air traffic due to volcanic columns and ash particles in the atmosphere.
The authorities estimate that in the coming hours the volcano can increase the energy of its eruption.
Last February, the eruption of Fuego volcano had recorded a powerfull eruption, forcing the authorities to declare a preventive alert and close the airport in the capital, because of the ash, which had also affected the tourist in the colonial city of Antigua, Guatemala.
