Weekly activity report of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, from June 21 to June 27, 2016
The level of activity continues at:
Yellow activity level or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.
Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz, the SERVICIO Geologico COLOMBIANO reports:
During the last week, the volcanic system continued to show unstable behavior. A significant increase in fracture activity mainly in the volcanic structure in relation to the previous week is highlighted. Earthquakes are located mainly in the seismogenic sources of the South West, North distal, proximal North and to a lesser extent, the Northeast, the East and the Arenas crater at depths ranging from 0, 5 and 8.0 km.
The appearance of two significant increases on 22 and 26 June, located southwest of Arenas crater at depths between 2.0 and 4.0 km are highlighted. The earthquake highest in energy was presented on 22 to 12:13 (local time) with a maximum magnitude of 3.0 ML (local magnitude), which was reported as felt by residents near the volcano.
Seismic activity related to fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits also recorded a slight increase, characterized by the occurrence of earthquakes long period (LP) and very long period (VLP), pulses of tremors and multiple earthquakes due to fluid shifts, with variable energy levels. Also during this week continuous volcanic tremor was recorded with different energy levels. As for the location of this type of seismicity, it is mainly located in the Arenas crater sector and in the south and south – east of the volcano area.
Many of these seismic signals have been associated with the process of emission of ash into the atmosphere , as reported yesterday and this morning, which were visualized from the city of Manizales and some municipalities in the department of Tolima, and as representatives of the Los Nevados National Park (NNNP) and officials of the SERVICIO Geologico COLOMBIANO who were in the field work in the volcano area.
Significantly, given the favorable climatic conditions of the day of yesterday and today, it is possible to observe from different points ash emissions, which corroborates the instability of the volcanic system so that emissions have been reported previously, it has not ruled to register new seismic signals of this type with higher levels of energy and emissions of ash in the atmosphere, which can be dispersed depending on wind conditions that prevail in the region.
The volcanic deformation measured from electronic inclinometers, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and satellite images to track changes in the tilt, the position and shape of the volcano (respectively), continues to record changes.
The volcano continues to emit into the atmosphere large amounts of water vapor and gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), as it was felt by the permanent stations SCANDOAS installed in the Volcano area and on satellite imagery. In the monitoring of satellite images provided by the site Mirova, no thermal anomaly has been identified.
The column of gas, steam and ash, from time to time, reached a maximum height of 1,800 meters above the summit of the volcano, on June 27 The direction of the dispersion of the column was in line with the prevailing wind in the area, which during the week showed a predominant direction towards the northwest of the volcano.
From the technical-scientific and instrumental analysis, it is considered that the volcano Nevado del Ruiz continues to evolve and it is possible that future events may indicate an acceleration of the process, involving greater instability thereof requires changes consequently its level of activity.
