Weekly activity report of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, from June 14 to June 20, 2016

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the Colombian Geological Service reports that:

During the last week, the Nevado del Ruiz volcano presented a seismic activity associated with fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits, which showed an increase compared to the previous week, and seismicity related to the fracturing of rocks inside the volcano, which showed a slight decrease in the number of earthquakes and seismic energy released.

The earthquakes fracture type of rock inside the volcano, were mainly in the seismogenic zones of the North, proximal and distal to 7.1 km and 4.3 km on average of the Arénas crater, respectively, and depths varying between 5.3 and 8.1 km. Dispersed manner, this type of seismic activity was also recorded in the areas of North-East and South-Southeast of the volcano at depths between 1.0 and 5.3 km. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 1.6 ML (local magnitude), corresponding to an earthquake recorded on June 19 at 11:44 (local time) in the southern sector, 3.3 km from the Arenas crater at a depth of 2.6 km.

Seismic activity related to fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits, was characterized by the appearance of long period earthquakes (LP) and very long period (VLP), pulses of tremor and multiple earthquakes of fluid movements with different energy levels. Some of them with more energy than the previous week. Many of these seismic signals have been associated with the processes of ash emissions into the atmosphere. Also during this week, continuous volcanic tremor was recorded at very low power levels. As for the location of this type of seismicity, it was mainly located in the crater, next to this sector and in the South and Southeast of the volcano area.

The volcanic deformation measured from electronic inclinometers, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and satellite images to track changes in the tilt, the position and shape of the volcano (respectively), continues to show Changes .
The volcano continues to emit into the atmosphere large amounts of steam and water gas, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), as it was felt by the permanent stations SCANDOAS installed in the Volcano area and satellite imagery. In monitoring the satellite images provided by the site Mirova, no thermal anomaly has been identified.
The column of gas, steam and ash, from time to time, reached a maximum height of 650 meters above the summit of the volcano, on June 14 The direction of the dispersion of the column was in line with the prevailing wind in the area, which during the week showed a predominant direction towards the west of the volcano.

In June 22, 2016 at 12h13 (local time), a volcano-tectonic earthquake, combined with the fracturing of the rock inside the volcano, with a magnitude of 3.0 ML (local magnitude), located 3.5 km south – east of Arenas crater was recorded at a depth of 3.5 km.
