Thursday morning at 8:05, the volcano again erupted. It takes place on the southeast flank of Piton de la Fournaise. But the weather is bad in the tops of the island. And for now, the observatory’s cameras fail to observe this new flow. But the observatory team glimpsed four lava fountains, visible if the weather becomes more favorable from the Piton de Bert .
The eruption began on Thursday morning shortly after 8:00. it is located on the southeast flank at the level of Chateau Fort, not far from the eruption of May 2015. It followed a seismic crisis that started last night around 11:40 p.m..
The Volcanological Observatory of Piton de la Fournaise noted a recovery in seismicity since 3 to 4 days.
But for now, the weather prevents aerial reconnaissance to precisely locate this new eruption and its intensity. It is indeed very bad in the high.
An observatory team left foot to the Piton de Bert outcrop to try to learn more. But the eruption is in the rain, in fog and has not been able to do a visual observation of the eruption. A strong wind also mask mostly sounds from the eruption.
For its part, the prefect of Reunion triggered the alert 2-2 “ORSEC * Volcano” level: ongoing eruption. Public access to the Enclos Fouqué, either from the path of the Pas de Bellecombe or from any other path as well as the helicopter landing in the volcano area are prohibited until further notice.
This is the first eruption of the year.
26 MAY 2016. This Thursday, May 26, 2016, the volcano erupted at 8:05. Weather conditions will be shown warmer than this morning, our photographer was able to fly over the area early in the afternoon and take the first pictures of the six fountains of lava. Some reach forty meters. The eruption being in the pen would have started “likely southeast of the volcanic massif in the Castle region,” said the observatory. An important then fog reduced the visibility to the area, making observations difficult. If access to the enclosure has been completely banned, people could now be there: five cars are parked in the parking lot of the No Bellecombe. A helicopter began to reconnoitre, but had to withdraw, given the poor flying conditions.
2:40 p.m. Our photographer was able to fly over the area of the rash and take the first photos and videos showing the lava fountains
1:20 p.m.: In the parking lot of the No Bellecombe, five cars are being parked. So people could probably be lowered in the paddock this morning. A helicopter began to reconnoitre, but because of bad weather (rain and fog), the flight was cut short. Note that the vehicles were on the site before triggering the alarm.
12: Nicolas Villeneuve, director of Volcano Observatory takes stock of what we know this morning the eruption (read his full interview). “You have to imagine that in 36 years, the peak had between 59 and 62 eruptions. The statistical return is not sufficient to establish the duration of an eruption from its first signs. It is a natural phenomenon that can be very brutal. Currently, the eruption is about to ramp up but is not yet possible to say whether it will be strong, short, etc “.
11:30 – 6 fountains of lava were observed by scientists sent off by the volcano observatory near the Piton de Bert (also called Piton Green Wood), east and southeast of the crater Chateau Fort. Some reach 40 to 50 meters high, although it is always difficult to observe because of bad weather. “It is a usual height early in the eruption and that indicates that there is a lot of activity,” The pressure should decrease the hours and some eruptive vents should cease to be supplied, which provides no indication of the duration of the eruption, “because if we can predict the arrival of eu eruption, there is no way to predict its course, said the observatory. the conditions are still very poor on site .
10:30 – A team from the Centre visited near the Piton de Bert (also called Piton Green Wood). It lies in the rain, in fog and has not been able to do a visual observation of the eruption. A strong wind also mask mostly sounds from the eruption.
9 – In a statement sent to 9am, the prefecture reported that according to “the information provided by the volcano observatory, the rash occurs in the pen Fouqué in Southeast flank Consequently, the prefect. the meeting started today at 8:30 am warning 2-2 Plan “ORSEC * Volcano”: ongoing eruption public access to the paddock Fouqué, either from the path of the No Bellecombe or from any. another path and the helicopter landing in the volcano area is prohibited until further notice. a fuller recognition will take place later. “
The observatory said to have observed an increase in seismicity since 4 days. “Yesterday there was a major crisis, with a rise of magma towards the surface and this morning at 8:05, this magma was projected outside.” This increase is confirmed to 23h, according to the prefecture.
This is the first eruption of 2016, the last eruption of the Piton de la Fournaise from October 2015. Last year was very active volcano, with eruptions four: two of a dozen days February and May, a very short late July-early August and last particularly long, from August to October, almost 70 days. Over the past decade, the Piton de la Fournaise erupted about fifteen times.
Activity Bulletin Friday, May 27, 2016 at 11:30 am (local time)
Since 8:45 this morning, the observatory recorded a significant drop of volcanic tremor. At 11:00 the tremor stopped, and only a residual degassing signal persists.
This means very likely stopping the flow of lava in surface.
At present, no visual observation was performed because of bad weather.
No hypothesis is discarded about the developments in the coming days.
