Lake level of Rincon de la Vieja fell three meters .
10 APRIL 2016. The lake level of Rincon de la Vieja volcano fell three meters in the last four months. This has been determined by volcanologists of the National Seismological Network (RSN) on a visit. Raul Mora Amador, one of the specialists, has attributed the fact to the decrease in the amount of rain and the constant phreatic eruptions (composed of gases, mud and water). These exceeded the crater walls and dispersed in the northern sector of the volcano.
The most recent phreatic eruption, which was recorded by a permanent camera RSN in Buenos Aires de Upala, occurred at 10:34 a. m. last Wednesday 30 March. For specialists, November 2015 (date of the last visit) to April this year, the lake has suffered a loss of 190,000 cubic meters of water.
The experts also called their attention in the fumaroles located in the crater. These have had great activity, temperatures were 130 ° C and there were streams of sulfur, which were not observed in November. They also noted that the distance, the walls are whitish colors. This indicates that some of the emanations are outperforming the crater and have spilled material in the valleys of several rivers, especially the Pénjamo river.
Although they felt that at this time there is no danger of a violent explosion, they have warned the inhabitants of the surrounding towns the said river, will be on alert when the rainy season starts, as it can produce lahars or mud flow. The Pénjamo passes near the towns of Buenos Aires, Armenia and Aguas Claras de Upala near 4,000 people. It is a tributary of the river Niño, which empties into Lake Nicaragua.
In parallel, the volcanologist said they found a thermal imbalance in the lake. So while on the surface it is at a temperature of 46 ° C, the bottom of the lake can reach 150 ° C. Access is closed to the Rincon de la Vieja volcano, located in the national park of the same name is located between the cantons of Liberia and Bagaces (Guanacaste) and Upala (Alajuela) began a new period of phreatic eruptions during the last half of 2011.
Due to this constant activity, the National Emergency Commission (CNE) has hosted recommendations of the RSN and the Volcano Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), and decided to close tourist access to the active crater. This, is at risk of a phreatic eruption -whose gases and sludge out at temperatures.
Raul Mora said that the National Park Rincon de la Vieja itself is open and that the only closed path is leading to the active crater. “People can visit the park and enjoy it, but not up to the active crater. That’s the recommendation, “he said.
