During the last hours several earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 to 5.4 degrees occurred in the province of Caylloma. The Volcanological Observatory Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) connects these seismic vibrations to an increase in activity of Sabancaya volcano, located about 100 km northwest of Arequipa. The active volcano 5976 meters high in the Andes in southern Peru is the most active volcano in Peru and is one of a long chain of three large stratovolcanoes oriented North South on 20km.
The vibrations strongly felt, damaged 33 houses in the districts of Cayllominos, Coporaque Ichupampa and Maca. Four houses of mud and straw collapsed together, five are uninhabitable. There are no injuries, authorities warned the population against the risk of aftershocks. Prensa Latina.
Communique of the IGP:
Earthquakes recorded in the vicinity of Maca are in part linked to the activity of Sabancaya. Recent earthquakes recorded around Maca, in the province of Caylloma, are in part linked to activity of volcanic massif Sabancaya, which since February 2013 through a seismic unrest, explained Dr. Orlando Macedo, director of the Observatorio Vulcanológico del Sur (OVS) of the Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP). The Observatory’s experts came to this conclusion after analyzing many earthquakes in the region presented. To do this, they located 31 representative events with magnitudes between M2.5 and M5,4 (local magnitude), which took place between 7:40 p.m. and 6:51 pm pm yesterday and today, at a distance of about 5 km and 8 km south of Maca.”These earthquakes occurred in swarms (continuous suites of earthquakes with a magnitud variablese), which show a partial influence on the activity of Sabancaya. There also, next to the town of Maca, and in general in the Colca valley, several geological faults that make this resort a highly seismic zone, “he said .The Dr. Macedo noted that the recent earthquakes are not near the crater. “If these earthquakes in the coming days begin to approach the crater of Sabancaya, this would indicate a greater influence on the activity of the massif itself, a situation which the OVS will be ready to report in time timely “, he concluded.
