An earthquake of magnitude M 4.5 on the Richter scale shook on July 19 the San Cristobal volcano, in the northwest of Nicaragua, causing no casualties or damage, even if he has sown the alarm among the population, officials said.
The quake was recorded at 3:25 local time (9:25 GMT) and its epicenter was on land, 10 kilometers north of San Cristobal, Department of Chinandega, said the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INET) in a report. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 14.6 km, and was caused by an event related to local defects in the Nicaraguan volcanic chain, said seismologist of INETER, Petronila Flores.
The quake was reported by residents of the municipalities of Chinandega department, near the volcano. The authorities have reported no casualties or damage from the quake. The San Cristobal, 1,745 meters high, is the highest volcano in Nicaragua, and is located on the « line of fire » of the Pacific and in the « chain of volcanoes of Nicaragua », composed of 13 active cones on the Pacific coast.
