Strong explosion on Santiaguito volcano in Guatemala
22 MAY 2016. Santiaguito volcano, located in the department of Quetzaltenango, in western Guatemala, today reported a loud explosion, officials said.
The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh) said tthat he explosion which occurred at the volcano of 8,366 feet, was not audible. However, the column of ash and smoke reached 11,482 feet above sea level.
The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred), meanwhile, reported no ashfall in communities near the volcano.
Santiaguito is one of the 33 volcanoes in Guatemala which with Pacaya and Fuego are the most active in the Central American country. Three days ago this cone had a loud explosion and sent ash 14,763 feet above sea level, according to the Insivumeh.
