Santiaguito volcano continues its high activity phase with two loud explosions recorded by the seismic station as shown in picture No. 1 of the pyroclastic flow . These explosions have generated pyroclastic flow downhill on the southern flank and the south – East side to the base of the dome.
The collapse of the eastern edge of the Caliente dome made a column of gray ash 4,500 meters to the west, the southwest and the south, to a distance of 30 km, with a tendency to increase.
It is estimated that due to the fine ash that it can reach the same distance as the other events.

There are ashfall reports on the finca Monte Bello, El Faro, Aldeas Loma Linda, San Marcos Palajunoj, Las Marias, El Nuevo Palmar, a few minutes on San Felipe Retalhuleu and other regions. Due to the variations of wind, ash falls are not excluded in the city of Quetzaltenango.
Santiaguito volcano is in a high phase eruptive, so more or less similar events may be generated in the hours and \ or upcoming days. So we should not remain near the volcanic complex because it can generate pyroclastic flows with the same or higher power.

Therefore, the INSIVUMEH recommends:
At the CONRED to take precautions on the alertness, the implementation deems necessary for precautions with the air near the volcanic complex, mainly because of the ash fall which can contaminate water drinking and cause respiratory problems.
At the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, to take precautions with air traffic, such as ash moves in directions West, Southwest and South to 4,500 meters above sea level, with a potential to be transported over distances of 50 kilometers.

Santiaguito volcano maintains the highest level of explosive activity in recent years, with violent eruptions, accompanied by ash plumes that reach 4500 to 5.000 m. They move in the direction of the wind over 60 kilometers, which gives ash fall in the departments of Quetzaltenango, Retalhuleu, Mazatenango. The villages near the volcano, San Marcos and Loma Linda Palajunoj, Las Marias, El Palmar, San Felipe Retalhuleu, the finca Monte Bello, Monte Claro, El Faro, Patzulin, Florida, are
directly affected by abundant ash fall.

These eruptions generate pyroclastic flows towards the East and West, in the riverbeds Cabello Angel and San Isidro, with a length of 3 km. This activity was accompanied by rumbling and shock waves.
As mentioned at the beginning, this explosive activity is the highest recorded in the past two years, began in February with 6 events until late March with 31 eruptions that restarts since April 22.

It is necessary to mention that the recorded eruptions observed in the last four days, are more violent, with the expulsion of ballistic projectiles of various sizes and even volcanic bombs of 2 and 3 meters in diameter at a distance of 3 km .
So there is the possibility to generate violent eruptions, similar or higher than that of May 9, 2014.

CONRED, must take into consideration that the activity of Santiaguito volcano increases in energy, it is possible to generate similar or larger eruptions .It is therefore necessary to take precautions deemed necessary and maintain the state of alert. The villages of Loma Linda and San Marcos Palajujoj are most affected by ash falls, constants that can cause breathing problems, stomach problems and affect the view of the people.
