The technicians of the Institute of Geophysics (IG) have warned of a possible reactivation of the Tungurahua volcano in the coming weeks. The volcanic activity is low at present, but they warned against new magma movements. Between 1 and 20 May 2016, a small swarm of earthquakes long period type (LP) was recorded. These swarms are common in periods of quiescence and are associated with fluid movements within the volcanic edifice. Over the past two months, visual observation conditions were variable. The surface activity when the volcano was clear, was characterized by low intensity fumaroles and an absence of ash emissions, this from the end of statements of the last eruption on 15 March this year.
Based on the monitoring results and the recent history of the reactivation of the Tungurahua, two eruptive scenarios that could occur in the medium term (next weeks to months) are offered:
-a gradual recovery with small to moderate explosions, lava fountains and continuous emission of ash columns up to 6 km above the crater.- – This could be also a quick recovery with a rapid opening of the conduit with moderate to large explosions. This scenario could be an eruption column large (up to 10 km above the crater) and pyroclastic flows that could descend the gorge to reach the foot of the volcano. From the viewpoint of Ambato it was not possible to observe the mountain because it is covered by clouds, due to frequent rains.
The surface activity when the volcano is clear, is characterized by low fumerolienne activity and the absence of ash emissions.
