On January 8, 2016 at 12:30 a new small explosion occurred on the Turrialba volcano, similar to those observed on 3 and 6 January this year. Seismic activity remained low to moderate.
On January 6, 2016 at 11:56 there was a small eruption which has produced an ash column of about 100 meters which rose from the crater to the west. Most ash fallout in the crater. The eruption left a seismic signal recorded on the seismograph network of OVSICORI–UNA, located on the volcano.
According to the AERMOD computer , modeling used to stimulate how gases and particles emitted by the Turrialba volcano are scattered, the materials would be transported by winds over the region including Tres Ríos, La Carpintera, San Marcos Tarrazú, Quepos, and towards The pacific . However, with this small eruption from low volume of ashes, no cases of ash falls are expected on the populations located to the west of the volcano.
The RSN will continue to monitor any developments in the activity of the volcano.
