Activity report of the Turrialba volcano
Updated Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 6:33 p.m..
The eruption of 1 June 2016, began at 10:40 p.m. lasted 1 hour 50 minutes.
The current eruption began on June 2 at 0:37, lasted six hours consistently, at the time of this report update (6:33 a.m.) (see seismogram attached).
Ash and gas probably move to the northwest according to the IMN station located above the Turrialba volcano at 3,300 meters.
June 2, 2016 at 21:00.
After 5 days of “relative calm”, ash emissions occur again on June 1, 2016, at 10:40 p.m. with sustained activity. The main impulses occurred at 10:40 p.m. June 1, 0:37, 5:13 and 5:45 Saturday, June 2 The ash emissions continue during the drafting of the report.
The seismic activity is characterized by a spasmodic tremor (variable amplitude) from 10:10 p.m. June 1
The emission cloud reached 2000 m above the volcano (5300 m) at 5:20 and 06:00. The direction of variable dispersion, mainly to the north, the Northwest and the Northeast was observed by cameras. The model AERMOD foresee a dispersion toward the west and northwest.
Possible ash falls were reported in:
Heredia Santa Lucía de Barva, Heredia Santo Domingo, San Francisco de Heredia, San José Tibás, perhaps Moravia.
A slight smell of sulfur is reported in La Sabana, Alajuelita, San Rafael de Escazu and Coronado.
