Nordic Ski – Langjökull crossing

Three day nordic ski tour across Langjökull, Iceland´s second largest glacier.

Midnight sun, Langjökull glacier

Nordic skiing on an Icelandic glacier is something to remember for a lifetime. Langjökull glacier is Iceland´s 4th largest and the one closest to Reykjavík. This tour is a „mini“ expedition so it is a good preperation for larger expeditions or just a great way to experience the magnificent glaciers of Iceland.

The skiing is not technical as the glacier is not very steep so this is suitable for all levels of skiers. However we will be pulling pulkas with our equipment so a certain level of fitness is required. Our route is 35-40 km in total so we have plenty of time to explore and enjoy Langjökull. We will make two camps on our way across the glacier and you will learn from our experienced guides how to make yourself comfortable on the glacier.

This tour is one of the most accessible glacier crossings in the world and a must for all skiers!

Day 1 : Arrival – Flybus from the airport to accommodation in Reykjavik

Day 2: We pick you up at your accommodation in Reykjavík at 6.30 in the morning. First we go to the Trek base and check equipment to make sure everything fits and nothing is forgotten. Then we take a 2 hour scenic bus ride up to the glacier, stopping along the way to see the Hraunfossar waterfalls. At about 800m above sea level we put our skis on and start up the west side of the glacier. The first day our objective is to get up to about 1200m and put up the first camp.

Distance: 12-14 km (7-8 miles)
Ski time: 5-6 hours

Day 3: We break camp early in the morning and start skiing towards the top of the glacier. At midday we arrive at Þursaborg, a rocky summit protruding through the glacier at 1300 meters above sea level. We stop to enjoy the view before we start our descent down the east side of the glacier and put up our second camp with views towards Þingvellir and south Iceland.

Distance: 10-15 km (7-9 miles)
Ski time: 6-7 hours

Day 4: Today we finish our crossing of Langjökull by descending all the way to the glaciers edge on the eastern side. Depending on the season we have different options to get off the ice, either at Hvítárvatn glacier lagoon or Skálpanes. In the afternoon we meet a truck that will take us back to Reykjavík, arriving there around dinnertime.

Distance: 10-15 km (7-9 miles)
Ski time: 6-7 hours

Day 5: Departure – Flybus to the airport

Note: All specialized equipment is provided by Trek, such as tents, cooking gear, insulation matress etc. Trek also provides the ski gear, skis, bindings, poles, pulkas and skins.
