Why not visit the Volcanoes in the south of Chile with a guide and make the most of hiking!

You’ll climb le Villarrica and the Llaima, two famous volcanoes in the south of the country and enjoy a free day at Pucan to relax between two expeditions.

The Villarrica is the most active volcano of the Andes cordillera. It’s nearly perfect cone witnesses the explosive activity of the volcano. During the last years the magma surfaced the bottom of the crater and gasses are emitted regularly. As for Llaima the last eruption dates back to April 2009 with a projection of volcanic ash.

Day 1: SANTIAGO – TEMUCO (by plane) – PUCON
Santiago de Chile: welcome at the airport or at your hotel by your french and english guide. For the rest of the day you will be accompanied by a local guide to visit the town.
Lunch (free to do as you wish).
The Chilean capitol with all its charm is tucked at the foot of the Andes. Although it has become a modern and busy town there are still some parts of it full of romantic charm.

Transfer to Santiago airport and take flight for Temuco. Then from Temuco transfer to Pucon to prepare for the expedition the next day.

Day 2: PUCON – CLIMB OF VILLARRICA VOLCANO (2847m) – PUCON –
Climb to the volcano Villarica at 07:00. We start climbing the Villarrica volcano in a vehicle to the base which is about 40 minutes. We follow a chairlift at first for about 40 minutes then continue across an extensive moraine. The slope is more significant on the edge of the crater. The last part of the climb, where the slope is much steeper, we have to use crampons (provided by the service). 5 hours are needed to reach the crater.
Show guaranteed! This volcano is one of the most active and therefore always has smoke, a little lava in the crater, and if you’re lucky, some explosions … three hours back down by ice slides that will bring us back to our starting point. Then drive to the Los Pozones spa to relax.

Day 3: Pucon – Free activities
Safety day. If the weather is bad for the ascent on day 2 we will use this day instead

Possible activities:
Horse riding
Boat trip on the lake (optional)
At the end of the day, transfer to Malalcahuello or to Conguillio Park to get ready for the expedition the next day to the Llaima.

Day 4: Malalcahuello – Conguillio Park – Climb of Llaima volcano (3125m) – Malalcahuello
Early flight to Conguillío Park where we try to climb up to double Llaima crater by the Northwest side. (About 10 hours round trip). Downhill and transfer to Malalcahuello (or Temuco depending on flight times).

The two craters are active and count at least forty secondary cones on the side of the volcano.
The volcano’s activity is mainly effusive (with lava flows) or strobolian, but the snow at its peak creates explosions and causes ash clouds! In 1994 crack of 50 meters opened out which gave way to an important lava flow. The most recent eruption was on the 1st January 2008!

Day 5: Temuco – Santiago de Chile
Transfer to the airport and flight back for Santiago. Transfer to the hotel.

Recommendations:
The level of this visit is extremely high.
The climb to the volcanoes Villarrica and Llaima can be difficult even very difficult because of the weather and needs the use of special equipment (included) to confront the ice and snow on the summits.

The volcano activity and the meteorological conditions can cause important modifications to the programme. These modifications include the itinerary/timing but also the cancellation of an ascension.

Pucon: hotel MALALHUE**** or similar
Malacahuello: hotel MALACAHUELLO**** or similar
