Vatnajökull Crossing Expediton

Nine day expedition on cross country skis across Iceland’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull

Vatnajokull crossing

This tour is a small expedition for those who want a real challange. The trip starts at the western edge of Vatnajökull glacier and covers about 130-150 km to the south side of Vatnajökull. On the way we pass by Grímsvötn volcano before descending towards Öræfajökull where we climb Iceland’s highest summit. Hvannadalshnjúkur. Crossing Vatnajökull is often used as practice for bigger expeditions because it is a demanding trip and a real achievement! TREK guides have the right experience and equipment to operate this kind of expeditions with safety and a high chance of success.

Day 1: Arrival – Flybus to accommodation in Reykjavik

Day 2: After and equipment check we drive from Reykjavík to Jökulheimar in 4×4 jeep. We start skiing at 850m above sea level in the afternoon and put up the first camp on the ice cap.

Day 2-3: We keep ascending the icecap towards Grímsvötn volcano at 1700 meters. On the second night we camp on the glacier but on the third night we sleep in the geothermal heated hut on Grímsfjall. We are also rewarded with a sauna in the hut, a perfect way to relax and gather strength.

Day 4: This day is spent in Grímsfjall exploring this active volcanic area which erupts frequently. The last eruption was in 2010 and the geothermal activity has melted a lake in the glacier. To the south we have views of the route ahead and Iceland´s highest mountains. We spend another night in Grímsvötn.

Day 5-6: It takes us two days to reach Öræfajökull on the south side of Vatnajökull. We put up a camp close to Iceland’s highest summit, Hvannadalshnjúkur, and we ascend the summit at an altitude of 2110 m.

Day 7: On the last day we continue to descend down the glacier, all the way down to sea level in Skaftafell, take a welcome shower and relax after the journey and sleep in sleeping bag accommodation.

Day 8: Back up day in case of bad weather or difficult conditions along the way.

Day 9: Travel to Reykjavík with the scheduled bus.
