Awu, Indonésia :  the level of volcanic activity of G. Awu was increased.

During the month of November 2015 the visual observation of G. Awu has not been possible because of the fog cover .The peak was not observed.
The results of the monitoring of the seismicity of G. Awu during this month showed an significant increase of volcanic earthquakes , especially for the type of shallow volcanic earthquakes (VB), with usually a maximum of 4 episodes per day and up to 74 events 24 November 2015 at 19:00.

Potential hazards:

The characteristics of the last eruption of Mount Awu formed an explosive magmatic eruption, with steam, volcanic gases and incandescent material. Due to the eruption, a lava dome is formed in 2004; solfatare with a field of fumarolics gas including CO2, H2S, SO2, N2 and CH4, can be dangerous if they are above the limit value of the thresholds.
In the case of an explosive eruption, it is necessary to be aware of the potential emission / rockfall (incandescent) and ashes.

Based on the analysis / seismic and visual assessment, the level of volcanic activity of G. Awu was increased since the date of November 24, 2015 at 8:18 p.m. from Level I (normal) to level II (Waspada).
Intensive monitoring is ongoing to evaluate the activities of G. Awu and diffusion of the danger of eruption of G. Awu should be done so that people around the volcano are warned.
If there is a significant decrease / increase change in the volcanic activity of G. Awu , the activity level can be lowered / raised in accordance with the level of activity and threats.

The massive Gunung Awu stratovolcano occupies the northern end of Great Sangihe Island, the largest of the Sangihe arc. Deep valleys that form passageways for lahars dissect the flanks of the 1320-m-high volcano, which was constructed within a 4.5-km-wide caldera. Awu is one of Indonesia’s deadliest volcanoes; powerful explosive eruptions in 1711, 1812, 1856, 1892, and 1966 produced devastating pyroclastic flows and lahars that caused more than 8000 cumulative fatalities. Awu contained a summit crater lake that was 1 km wide and 172 m deep in 1922, but was largely ejected during the 1966 eruption.
